This weekend, the diocese hosts the Annual St. Jude the Apostle Medal Award at the Cathedral. Established in 1999 by Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch, the medal is awarded to a lay member of a parish for distinguished and outstanding service. Congratulations to Doris Yimoyines, our nomination for the award from St. Mary. Doris moved from CT to Tampa 15 years ago with her husband John and 2 daughters, Brieann and Alicia. They joined St. Mary parish within the first week. By week 2, Doris met with Fr. Bob Morris, Pastor at the time and that’s when the journey with St. Mary began! Fr. Bob appointed Doris as the chair of the Community Outreach Committee formed from the Parish Dream survey. From this committee, the Santa Maria Mission began and Doris’ passion and dedication has remained strong with the Mission from its inception. From the humble beginnings working out of the back of a pick up truck or from a small shed on the property prior to the church building, Doris would help Ondina Hernandez distribute blankets, food and clothing to those in need. She became very involved with the homeless and through the years became a health surrogate for the homeless who had no family. She also helped with bible camps, reading programs, health fairs, home visits, and special holiday events at the Mission. Every Tuesday you will find her supporting her passion at the Mission ministry. Doris was also actively involved in Faith Formation when her daughters attended the program and coordinated and introduced to St. Mary, Young Neighbors in Action, as well as chaperoned many teen outings. Doris served on the Parish Council for 7 years, 4 of those as President. She also worked with Sister Nancy on the Pastoral Care Council. An active member of St. Vincent de Paul, she has been responsible for coordinating the annual Advent Giving Tree that provides Christmas gifts to the Mission, Shady Oaks and families of St. Mary and St. Vincent de Paul. She has attended Bible study since it began at the parish; is a new member of the Women’s Council; a member on the Renovation Committee and is currently in the process of becoming a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. Congratulations Doris and God Bless you and all that you do!
